Reading Overview
At Acklam Whin, we understand that reading is the gateway to learning. Reading is at the heart of our curriculum, and we are exceptionally proud of our reading provision.
We recognise that proficient reading skills are necessary to allow children to access the breadth of the curriculum; improve their communication and language skills; and write well-structured, engaging compositions. It is widely recognised that reading helps children learn to make sense not only of the world around them but also people, building social-emotional skills and, of course, imagination.
At Acklam Whin we encourage all children to read widely and often across a range of genres to develop knowledge of themselves and the world in which they live; establish an appreciation and life-long love of reading; gain knowledge across the curriculum; develop their vocabulary and comprehension skills.
Through daily, high quality, discrete, systematic phonics teaching and thoughtfully planned reading lessons we strive to ensure that all children, regardless of background, are equipped with the knowledge and skills, to read age-appropriate texts fluently, easily and with good understanding to become confident and independent readers.
Our teachers use their expertise, up to date knowledge of texts and poems, to carefully choose texts that will excite and engage our children, allowing them to experience a rich diet of classics, contemporary texts and curriculum related books. Our book choices expose children to language and literature beyond their current experience, help them to build connections to their own lives ‘mirrors’ and open their minds to the lives of others ‘windows’.
We are determined every child will leave Acklam Whin with a passion for reading and prepared to fully access their secondary education, equipped with the tools to be independent, life-long learners.
