We Love Reading

"There is more treasure in books, than all the pirates' loot on treasure island" - Walt Disney

Central Library

Our well-stocked library is an enticing place to browse a vast range of diverse and high quality books. Books are organised into age-appropriate sections that include a wide range of genres, themes and authors to inspire choices and give children ownership of the books they want to read. We are always adding new titles to our library, influenced by requests from children, new releases, topical themes and inspiring authors.  Recommendations from adults and peers are shared to support children with their reading choices.

Reading Sheds

A popular part of break times are our welcoming reading sheds for children who wish to get lost in a book or share a story with their peers.  A selection of ‘cuddly’ friends are just waiting to snuggle up to hear a story too!

Classroom Libraries

Each classroom has its own inviting library where children and their teachers can share their love of books. Our classroom libraries feature a range of fiction and non-fiction texts, including class favourites, ‘mirrors and windows’ texts, recommendations and books linked to the curriculum.  Staff are always reviewing book stocks to ensure they are enticing and showcase latest releases and represent children’s requests. Children can borrow books from their classroom libraries to read at home.

Library Club

Our older children love sharing their passion for reading. They act as wonderful role models as they read stories and encourage our younger readers to develop a love of books.  Children are always excited to be chosen to attend this club.

Library Parent and Child Drop-in Sessions

Providing opportunities for our families to share in our love of reading is a priority at Acklam Whin. Weekly drop-in sessions, in the central library, provide time for children and their families to choose and read books together and make recommendations to others about favourite reads.

Nursery Parent Sessions

Across the year, Nursery parents are regularly invited to attend ‘Stay and Sing’ and ‘Stay for a Story’ sessions. These interactive and engaging sessions model and promote language-rich experiences and vocabulary acquisition for early reading.

Author Visits and Events

Throughout the year, we participate in exciting reading events to extend not just the children’s but staffs knowledge of books. From a poetry slam to a book signing, we love going to hear about new titles, share ideas and immerse ourselves in reading experiences.

Reading Collections

Developing a personal collection of well-loved books creates a lifelong passion for reading. To support this, during their time at Acklam Whin, children receive books to keep; including a beautiful book from a special visitor at Christmas time to share with their family as a bedtime favourite.
